Welcome to a blustery and snowy Tuesday: great news for kids who want to toboggan, but not so terrific if you have to drive in it.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for the GTA and parts of southern Ontario on Monday, calling for five to 10 centimetres of snow by Tuesday afternoon. It has since been lifted for most areas, including Toronto.

Areas along eastern Lake Ontario are expected to be hardest hit, with up to 15 centimetres of snow.

Throw in wind gusts up to 70 km/h, and it’s expected to be a tricky commute for most of the day.

A snow squall watch remains in effect for

Newmarket, Georgina, northern York and Durham regions, Uxbridge, Dufferin, as well as up to Barrie and Orillia.

Environment Canada said the heaviest snowfall will move out of the eastern portions of the GTA by late morning, and that “further snowfall amounts will be quite light.” However, blowing snow is in store this afternoon.

According to 680 NEWS meteorologist Jill Taylor, the GTA could receive between 3-8 centimetres of snow by the afternoon with another 2-7 centimetres possible this evening. Wind speeds of 30-50 km/h will blast through the region with higher gusts expected.

Prepare to bundle up not just for the blowing snow but also frigid temperatures. Although the high is -1 C it will feel like -8 C with the wind. Windy conditions are expected to continue into the evening as the temperature drops to -10 C with a wind chill near -20 C.
